Are Chinese EV interiors made from real leather and quality materials?

Interior perceived quality is where Chinese EVs have made the most visible leap in three years. Here's what to look for.
Material choices
Vegan leather (typically PU-coated or bio-based) is now standard on BYD, Xpeng, Zeekr and NIO. Real leather (nappa) is a premium upgrade — often €800–2,000.
Alcantara / Dinamica microfiber suede is common on premium trims (Zeekr, Xiaomi SU7). Real Alcantara is used on Aito M9 and Yangwang U9.
Real wood: Zeekr 001 Privilege, Aito M9, NIO ES8 offer open-pore wood. BYD and Xpeng typically use metallised trim.
How to judge quality on a test drive
Press the top of the dashboard — soft-touch across the whole surface, or hard plastic in corners? BYD Seal and Zeekr 001 = soft-touch everywhere; MG4 and BYD Dolphin = mixed.
Panel gaps in the sun visor mounting and B-pillar trim are the strongest tell of assembly quality.
Where they still trail
Long-term wear data is limited — 3 years is not enough to compare to a 10-year-old Audi.
Some early BYD trim surfaces (2022 Han) showed UV yellowing on soft-touch top rails. Fixed on 2024+.
- 01Standard is vegan leather + Alcantara.
- 02Material quality often surpasses similarly-priced EU cars.
- 03Long-term durability data still building.
