Do Chinese EVs need regular servicing and what does it cost?

EV servicing costs are famously low. Chinese OEMs have leaned into this — some offer prepaid service packages that lock in ownership costs for the warranty period.
The standard schedule
Annual inspection: battery health check, HV system diagnostics, brake and suspension check. £120–180 at OEM, less at independent EV specialists (increasingly capable on Chinese EVs).
Consumables: cabin filter every 24 months, brake fluid every 36 months, coolant every 60 months, brake pads roughly at 80–100,000 km due to regen braking.
Prepaid service packages
BYD UK Care Plan: £399 for 3 years / 30,000 miles. Xpeng NL Serviceplan: €449 for 4 years. NIO PowerService is bundled with battery subscription.
These typically pay back if you keep the car past 3 years and use OEM service — often required to preserve full warranty.
Independent servicing
The Motor Ombudsman EV Specialist directory (UK) lists 400+ workshops trained on Chinese EVs. Kwik-Fit, Halfords Autocentres and Formula One Autocentres accept BYD, MG, GWM.
Voiding warranty by using non-OEM: only for battery-affecting work. Wear items (brakes, filters, tyres) can be serviced anywhere.
