Are Chinese EVs safe and how do they perform in Euro NCAP tests?

The 'are they safe?' question has a 2014 answer and a 2026 answer, and they are not the same. Twelve years of CNCAP and now Euro NCAP testing has driven a structural step-change in Chinese EV body and battery design. Here is the current evidence.

01

Euro NCAP 2023–25 ratings for Chinese EVs

Almost every Chinese EV submitted to Euro NCAP since 2022 has scored five stars. Many score in the top decile for safety-assist (a category where Chinese OEMs' aggressive ADAS rollout pays off).

  • BYD Seal — 5 stars, 89/86/82/76 (Adult/Child/VRU/Assist).
  • BYD Atto 3 — 5 stars.
  • NIO ET5 — 5 stars, 91% safety-assist (one of the highest ever recorded).
  • Xpeng G6 — 5 stars.
  • Zeekr 001 — 5 stars, 91% adult occupant.
  • MG4 (SAIC) — 5 stars.

Battery-pack crash safety

Modern Chinese EVs route impact loads around the pack via a structural body cage and a perimeter sill of extruded aluminium or hot-stamped steel. The pack itself is mounted to the cage at 8–12 isolated points and the lower tray is a sealed crush structure.

Pack-integrity standards have tightened: GB 38031-2025 requires no fire or explosion within 30 minutes of an internal thermal-runaway event. Every major OEM now ships venting and isolator hardware that meets this.

ADAS and active safety

Chinese-market ADAS stacks (XNGP, NIO NOP+, Zeekr NZP, Huawei ADS) are tuned for very dense traffic and include features Europe is only just receiving (e.g. unprotected-left urban autopilot, multi-camera blind-spot occupancy).

Euro homologation strips some of these features and re-certifies the rest under R157 (ALKS). The hardware (3 LiDARs is common on flagships, 11+ cameras, radar fusion) is identical to the China-market spec.

What to verify before fleet adoption

Confirm the specific EU-homologated trim — China-market trims occasionally differ on side-airbag count and pretensioner placement.

Confirm software ADAS feature parity with the spec sheet — some advertised features are region-gated and may arrive via OTA later.

Confirm the BMS supports remote diagnostic access for your service network — every brand offers this but contract terms vary.

Key takeaways
  • 01Euro NCAP 5-star is now the norm, not the exception, for Chinese EVs.
  • 02Pack design has converged on a structural cage + isolated mount + sealed vent architecture.
  • 03ADAS hardware is class-leading; software is region-gated.
