Can I fast-charge a Chinese EV in Europe and which plug does it use?

Charging compatibility is the second-most-asked question after battery longevity, and it has a much simpler answer than buyers expect. The China-market GB/T DC connector is replaced with CCS2 (Europe), CCS1 (North America) or GB/T (left in place for Middle East / parts of Asia) before homologation. Here is the practical state of fast-charging Chinese EVs in Europe in 2026.

01

The plug situation, simplified

Every Chinese EV sold in the EU, UK, EFTA and most of the Middle East uses CCS2 for DC fast-charging and Type 2 for AC. The internal CAN-bus and ISO 15118 handshake have been re-homologated.

On private import (parallel import from China without OEM support), you will receive a vehicle with a GB/T DC port. Aftermarket GB/T-to-CCS2 adapters exist but are not always certified for charging speeds above 100 kW and may void some warranties.

02

Real-world charging speeds on European networks

Most 400 V Chinese EVs (BYD Atto 3, Dolphin, Seal; Xpeng G6; NIO ET5) peak at 150–180 kW DC on a 350 kW charger. 800 V platforms (Zeekr 001/7X, Xpeng G9, BYD Han L) sustain 300–360 kW for the 20–60% window.

10–80% charging times in field tests on IONITY 350 kW: BYD Seal ~28 min; NIO ET5 ~27 min; Zeekr 001 ~22 min; Xpeng G9 ~18 min.

Network roaming and payment

All major Chinese brands' apps ship with Plug & Charge (ISO 15118-20) for IONITY, Allego and Ewiva. Most also enrol the vehicle into Octopus Electroverse and Chargemap in the UK.

Tesla Supercharger access varies by market: open to non-Tesla CCS2 vehicles in most of Europe, but software-gated by VIN range — confirm with the OEM before relying on it for long-distance routes.

04

AC home charging

All EU-market Chinese EVs accept Type 2 AC. Standard onboard chargers are 11 kW three-phase; flagship models (NIO ET7, Zeekr 009) offer 22 kW. Single-phase 7.4 kW from a UK home wallbox works without any adapter.

Key takeaways
  • 01CCS2 is universal on EU-homologated Chinese EVs. No adapter needed.
  • 02800 V platforms genuinely deliver sub-20-minute 10–80% on 350 kW chargers.
  • 03Parallel-imports from China are still GB/T — plan for that.
