Can I import a Chinese EV into the USA? — ChinaEV.Autos guide

The USA is the most protected large auto market for Chinese EVs. Here's what's actually possible.

01

The 100% tariff

Section 301 tariff on Chinese EVs was raised from 25% to 100% in 2024 under the Biden administration and remained under the Trump-2 administration.

This makes direct import commercially unviable for private buyers.

02

The Mexico route

BYD is building a factory in Mexico and Chinese brands have explored USMCA-qualifying routes — but from March 2025, USMCA rules-of-origin criteria for EVs tightened, blocking most 'assembled in Mexico from Chinese content' approaches.

03

Grey imports

Cars <25 years old cannot be permanently imported to the USA without full FMVSS/EPA compliance.

The 25-year rule means the first Chinese EVs eligible for grey import will be BYD F3DM (2008) in 2033.

Key takeaways
  • 01USA passenger market is effectively closed.
  • 02Mexico-assembled Chinese cars face tightened USMCA rules.
  • 03Commercial trucks and buses (BYD, BYD Motor Coach) are the exceptions.
