Where can I source genuine Chinese EV spare parts outside China?

The parts question is now the limiting factor for many independent EV workshops, fleet operators and parallel-importers. The supply chain is in the middle of a major shift from 'only through the OEM' to a more mature multi-tier ecosystem.

01

Channel 1: Authorised OEM service network

If your vehicle is the local-market trim and still under warranty, this is the only sensible channel. Pricing is on parity with European OEMs (motor controllers ~£1,800–3,200, drive units ~£4,500–7,000, packs ~£8,500+).

Lead times for stocked parts: 24–72 hours. Lead times for non-stocked parts: 4–8 weeks from China.

02

Channel 2: Verified Tier-1 supplier marketplace

Battery cells (CATL, BYD, EVE, CALB), motors (Inovance, Huawei DriveONE, ZF China), power electronics (Inovance, BorgWarner China), thermal systems (Sanden, Hanon) and HMI hardware (Desay SV, Joynext) are now available through verified marketplaces that consolidate Tier-1 supplier inventory.

Pricing is typically 35–55% below OE service-network retail. Lead times 5–14 days air freight, 35–55 days sea freight.

Channel 3: China-export trading houses

For long-tail and discontinued parts, established export trading houses (mostly Guangzhou-, Hangzhou- and Shenzhen-based) can source from breakers, OE refurb stock and grey-market channels.

Quality is highly variable. Insist on a part-by-part inspection report and a serial-number provenance trace. Use this channel only when channels 1 and 2 cannot deliver.

04

Parts that are particularly difficult to source

BYD Blade battery modules — almost entirely closed to non-BYD service channels.

NIO swap-station-compatible packs — locked by VIN and BMS handshake.

Huawei ADS LiDAR units — controlled distribution; expect long lead times.

Most flagship-trim panoramic-roof glass — single supplier per model and slow re-order.

Key takeaways
  • 01Three channels, very different price/risk profiles.
  • 02Tier-1 marketplaces are the fastest-growing channel and the best value for non-warranty work.
  • 03Always verify ISO/TS 16949 and serial-number provenance before paying.
