Which Chinese EV has the best self-driving or driver-assist system?

Driver-assist is now the headline differentiator at the top of the Chinese EV market. The gap between the best Chinese stacks and the best Western stacks is genuinely small — and in dense urban environments it has reversed. Here is the credible ranking.
What counts as 'best'
Three useful dimensions: (1) the operational design domain (where can it actually drive?), (2) the failure rate (interventions per 1,000 km), (3) the sensor stack and compute platform behind it.
Any review that only quotes a top-trim demo on a closed track is not useful. Fleet telematics and independent press long-term tests are the data that matters.
The four leaders in 2026
Huawei ADS 3.0 — 1× LiDAR + 11 cameras + 5 radars + Ascend 910B compute. Shipped on Aito M9, Avatr 12, Luxeed S7. End-to-end neural-network architecture since v3.0. Best-in-class on unprotected urban left turns and congested city traffic in China.
Xpeng XNGP — 2× LiDAR (most trims) + 11 cameras. Strongest OTA cadence (monthly point-releases). Urban NoA across 300+ Chinese cities; gated Level 2+ in EU.
Li Auto AD Max — 1× LiDAR + cameras. Strong on highway and ring-road performance; closing the gap on urban use cases.
Zeekr NZP — Mobileye SuperVision + Zeekr in-house perception. Less aggressive than XNGP but well-tuned and very reliable.
What you actually get in Europe
Every system is feature-gated for Europe to comply with UN R157 (Automated Lane-Keeping). You get adaptive cruise + lane-centring + hands-on lane-change + parking, not point-to-point urban autopilot.
The hardware is identical to the China-market spec. As R157 is amended and member-state pilots expand (Germany's L4 framework, the Netherlands' urban-autopilot pilots), more features will be unlocked OTA.
Safety and intervention data
Per 1,000 km of XNGP urban autopilot use (publicly reported telemetry, 2024): ~1 disengagement per 26 km in dense Shanghai/Beijing traffic; ~1 per 180 km on ring roads.
Comparable Huawei ADS 3.0 numbers: ~1 per 38 km urban; ~1 per 220 km highway. These are operational, not certification, numbers.
- 01Huawei ADS 3.0 and Xpeng XNGP lead in China; both feature-gated in Europe.
- 02Hardware is identical worldwide; software is the regulatory variable.
