Is the NIO ET5 a good alternative to the Tesla Model 3?

The ET5 (and ET5 Touring wagon) is NIO's volume model in Europe. Its 100 kWh pack + 3-minute swap changes what 'refuelling' means for those inside the network.
Two battery options and BaaS
Standard 75 kWh LFP (445 km) or long-range 100 kWh NCM (560 km). Buy outright or lease the pack via BaaS — €169/month for 75 kWh, €289/month for 100 kWh in the Netherlands as of Q2 2026.
BaaS + swap is the only reason to choose this over a Model 3. On BaaS the ET5 lists below €40,000; a comparable Model 3 sits ~€10k higher.
The swap network reality in Europe
As of Q2 2026: 55+ stations across Norway, Netherlands, Germany, Sweden and Denmark. Not usable if you live in France, Spain, Italy or the UK.
Where it works, it's transformational — a full swap takes ~3 minutes; you never fast-charge on trips. Where it doesn't, the ET5 becomes a normal 130 kW-charging EV that still competes but loses its main advantage.
The rest of the package
Interior is genuinely premium — Alcantara, nappa options, one of the best sound systems in class. NOMI voice assistant is a legitimate delight. NIO Aquila driver-assist is competent but feature-gated in Europe like every other Chinese OEM.
- 01ET5 with BaaS + swap access = the strongest value in premium EV sedans.
- 02Outside the swap network, it's a good but not exceptional Model 3 alternative.
- 03Do not buy it without confirming a swap station is on your daily/weekly route.
