What is an EREV and how is it different from a PHEV? — ChinaEV.Autos guide

The EREV / PHEV distinction matters for driving feel, efficiency and regulatory eligibility.

01

Technical difference

EREV: engine → generator only. Motors always drive the wheels. Examples: Li Auto L6/7/8/9, MEGA, Aito M9 EREV, BMW i3 REx (2013).

PHEV: engine can drive wheels directly, motor assists. Examples: BYD Seal U DM-i (partly series-dominant but retains direct-drive clutch), Toyota RAV4 PHEV, Volvo XC60 T8.

02

Driving feel

EREV: pure EV feel — instant torque, no engine shifting, engine start only heard as background noise.

PHEV: EV feel with battery charge; hybrid feel with battery depleted (gear changes, engine response tied to throttle).

Efficiency trade-offs

EREV: less efficient than PHEV at steady 100+ km/h motorway speeds (generator conversion losses).

EREV: more efficient than PHEV in city and stop-go driving.

Key takeaways
  • 01EREV = engine as generator only.
  • 02PHEV = engine can drive wheels directly.
  • 03EREV feels electric; PHEV feels hybrid.
