What is semi-solid state battery technology and which Chinese EVs use it? — ChinaEV.Autos guide

Semi-solid batteries are the bridge between today's liquid-electrolyte NCM and tomorrow's all-solid-state. They're already in production.

01

What 'semi-solid' means

The electrolyte is a gel or partial solid at the electrode interface; the rest of the cell still uses liquid electrolyte.

Result: reduced dendrite formation, higher energy density, wider temperature tolerance.

02

Production models

NIO ET7 150 kWh (semi-solid, WeLion): 1,050 km CLTC, in production since 2024.

IM L6 130 kWh (WeLion Enrich semi-solid): 1,000+ km CLTC.

Aion Hyper GT (Aion Magazine semi-solid): coming 2026.

03

Trade-offs

Cost: 2–3x per kWh of standard NCM in 2026.

Cycle life: still being characterised — expected 1,500 cycles vs 2,000 for standard NCM.

Charging speed: currently limited to ~2C (semi-solid is optimised for range, not speed).

Key takeaways
  • 01Semi-solid is in production today, not future tech.
  • 02NIO ET7 150 kWh is the flagship.
  • 03Cost and cycle-life trade-offs remain.
