What is 800V charging and which Chinese EVs have it?

800V is the biggest single upgrade in EV usability of the decade. Here's what it means in practice and which cars actually benefit.
The physics
Power = voltage × current. Higher voltage means lower current for the same power — lower current means thinner cables, less heat, longer sessions at peak. A 400 V car maxes at ~250 kW; 800 V cars sustain 300+ kW deep into the charge curve.
Real-world impact: 10–80% in ~18 minutes on an 800V car and a 350 kW charger, vs ~27 minutes on a 400V car and the same charger.
Cars with true 800V today
- Xpeng G9, G6, P7+, X9
- Zeekr 001, 007, 7X, X, 009, Mix
- Aito M5/M7/M9 (Huawei-Seres)
- Avatr 11, 12
- BYD Han L, Tang L (Super e-Platform, 1000V)
- GAC Aion Hyper GT/SSR
The catch — you need an 800V-capable charger
Most European DC chargers are 500V-limited. Your 800V car will still charge — the vehicle's on-board DC-DC steps voltage — but you cap out at ~200 kW.
Ionity, Fastned Ultra (400 kW), Allego Ultra (350 kW+), Aral Pulse (300+ kW) and Tesla V4 unlock the full potential.
- 01800V doubles usable charging speed on capable stations.
- 02Meaningless on legacy 50 kW chargers — same speed as 400V.
- 03Choose 800V if you road-trip on Ionity/Fastned Ultra corridors.
