What is Plug & Charge (ISO 15118) and do Chinese EVs support it?
Updated 2026-05-046 min read

Plug & Charge finally makes DC charging as simple as a fuel pump. Here's what your Chinese EV needs and where it works.
01
How the handshake works
The car and charger exchange TLS-signed contract certificates provisioned by your CPO (charge-point operator, e.g. Ionity). Session starts automatically once handshake succeeds — usually within 2 seconds of plugging in.
02
Which OEMs enable it out-of-the-box in Europe
- BYD: enabled on Atto 3 / Seal / Han from mid-2024 via Ionity contract
- NIO: enabled fleet-wide via NIO Power contract
- Xpeng: enabled on G6/G9/P7+ via IONITY contract
- Zeekr: enabled on all EU-market cars via Ionity + Fastned
- MG (SAIC): enabled on MG4 / MG5 from Q4 2024
03
Which networks accept it
Universal: Ionity, Allego, EnBW HyperNetz, Fastned. Growing: BP Pulse, Aral Pulse, TotalEnergies, Ewiva. Not yet: most council/municipal chargers, Tesla Supercharger for non-Tesla.
Key takeaways
- 01Every 2024+ Chinese EV in Europe supports Plug & Charge.
- 02You may need to activate it in the OEM app once.
- 03Widest coverage on Ionity, Allego, Fastned.
